My EZGO TXT takes a long time to start up

Can anyone help me out here? My EZGO TXT is driving me nuts with its slow start, especially when it’s cold. I’ve tried a few things, but nothing’s really worked. It’s ruining my golf days. Has anyone successfully fixed this kind of issue?

Response

Adjusting the valves sorted it out for me. It’s a bit technical, but worth the effort. Maybe that’s something you could try?

Symptoms:

  • Golf cart struggles to start, particularly in colder weather.
  • Requires several attempts or adjustments before it starts running.

Possible Causes:

  • Valve adjustments are overdue.
  • Issues with the starter/generator.
  • Choke cable not properly aligned or malfunctioning.

Solutions that Worked:

  1. Adjusting Valves
    • What I Did: Adjusted the intake valves to .004 and the exhaust to .006.
    • Outcome: Starting time improved significantly.
    • Personal Experience: The cart started much quicker, especially noticeable in cold weather.
    • Steps:
      1. Ensure the engine is cold for accurate valve adjustment.
      2. Locate the valves, typically under the valve cover on the engine.
      3. Use a feeler gauge to measure and adjust the intake valves to .004 inches and the exhaust valves to .006 inches.
      4. Rotate the engine manually to ensure the valves open and close properly.
      5. Reassemble any removed components and test start the cart.
    • Expert Tip: Regular valve maintenance is key. Consider using a torque wrench for precise tightening of the valve cover.
    • Handy Tips: Keep track of all screws and parts removed. Use a clean workspace to avoid debris entering the engine.
  2. Replacing Starter/Generator
    • What I Did: Replaced the old starter/generator with a new one.
    • Outcome: Consistent and immediate starting.
    • Personal Experience: The replacement eliminated the sluggish start issue.
    • Steps:
      1. Identify the starter/generator location, usually near the engine.
      2. Disconnect the battery to ensure safety.
      3. Remove the old starter/generator by disconnecting the wiring and unbolting it.
      4. Compare the old and new units to ensure compatibility.
      5. Install the new starter/generator, reconnect the wiring, and secure it in place.
      6. Reconnect the battery and test the cart for starting efficiency.
    • Expert Tip: Check the wiring and connections for corrosion or wear during replacement.
    • Handy Tips: Label the wires during disassembly for easy reconnection. Ensure the new starter/generator is properly aligned.
  3. Checking and Adjusting Choke Cable
    • What I Did: Ensured the choke cable was correctly adjusted and functioning.
    • Outcome: Easier starts, particularly in cold weather.
    • Personal Experience: The choke adjustment made a noticeable difference.
    • Steps:
      1. Locate the choke cable, often accessible under the seat or near the carburetor.
      2. Inspect the cable for any signs of wear, fraying, or damage.
      3. Adjust the cable to ensure it fully engages and disengages the choke mechanism.
      4. Test the choke function during a cold start to ensure effectiveness.
      5. Make further adjustments as needed for optimal performance.
    • Expert Tip: A well-functioning choke is crucial for cold starts. Regularly lubricate the choke cable to prevent sticking.
    • Handy Tips: If the cable is damaged, consider replacing it entirely. Ensure the choke mechanism on the carburetor is also clean and functional.
