My 2022 ICON Golf Cart’s Motor Controller Is a Nightmare to Program! What Am I Doing Wrong?

Recently, I’ve been pulling my hair out trying to program my 2022 ICON golf cart’s motor controller. I’ve fiddled with multiple settings, but it’s like the cart has a mind of its own. Seriously, I need some help here!

Response

Trust me, you’re not alone. I’ve been down that rabbit hole with my own 2022 ICON golf cart. One thing that really helped me was changing the Base Mot 5 to 150 amps.

Symptoms

  • Controller not responding to programming changes
  • Golf cart not reaching desired speed
  • Low speed mode not activating

Possible Causes

  • Incorrect programming settings
  • Firmware limitations
  • Electrical issues

Solutions that Worked

1. Gen Current Limit BS n

What I Did:

Changed the values of BS 3, BS 4, BS 5 to the value of BS 2 in Menu 10 “Gen Current Limit BS n”.

Outcome:

The controller started to output more power, allowing for higher speed.

Personal Experience:

After making this change, I was able to reach 33MPH.

Estimated Cost: $0

Time Needed: 5-10 minutes

Steps:

  1. Turn off the golf cart and ensure it’s in a safe location.
  2. Access the controller’s programming menu using the handheld programmer or software interface.
  3. Navigate to Menu 10 labeled “Gen Current Limit BS n”.
  4. Change the values of BS 3, BS 4, BS 5 to match the value of BS 2.
  5. Save the changes and exit the programming menu.
  6. Test the cart in a controlled environment to ensure the changes took effect.

Expert Tip:

Always test the cart in a safe environment after making such changes. Also, keep a record of your original settings in case you need to revert back.

2. Low Speed Mode DI Port Setting

What I Did:

Changed the LSM signal input port setting in IconLive from 34 to 2.

Outcome:

The low speed mode started working as expected.

Personal Experience:

I initially struggled with LSM and found that changing the DI port setting resolved the issue.

Estimated Cost: $0

Time Needed: 5-10 minutes

Steps:

  1. Open IconLive software on your computer.
  2. Connect the computer to the golf cart’s controller using a USB cable.
  3. Locate the LSM signal input port setting in the software interface.
  4. Change it from 34 to 2.
  5. Save the changes and disconnect the computer.

Expert Tip:

Always double-check your settings in the software interface to ensure they align with your hardware configurations. Also, make sure your software is up to date.

3. RPM Limit and Firmware

What I Did:

Checked the firmware version and found it to be version 200 with a 7,200 rpm limit.

Outcome:

Realized that the rpm limit is the main constraint for speed.

Personal Experience:

I tried almost everything in the programming to get it faster but found that the rpm limit is the main constraint.

Estimated Cost: $0

Time Needed: 5-10 minutes

Steps:

  1. Access the controller’s programming menu.
  2. Navigate to the “System Info” section.
  3. Check the firmware version and note it down.
  4. Also, note down the rpm limit mentioned in the same section.

Expert Tip:

Always check the firmware version of your controller, as it can affect the available settings and limits. If a firmware update is available, consider updating it but make sure to read the release notes first.

4. Changing Base Mot 5 to 150 amps

What I Did:

Changed the setting on Base Mot 5 to 150 amps.

Outcome:

Noticed a significant improvement in top-end power.

Personal Experience:

After making this change, the cart seemed to reach higher speeds more easily.

Estimated Cost: $0

Time Needed: 5-10 minutes

Steps:

  1. Turn off the golf cart and ensure it’s in a safe location.
  2. Access the controller’s programming menu.
  3. Navigate to the Base Mot 5 setting.
  4. Change it to 150 amps.
  5. Save the changes and exit the programming menu.
  6. Test the cart in a controlled environment to ensure the changes took effect.

Expert Tip:

Always test your cart in a controlled environment after making any programming changes. Also, keep a record of your original settings in case you need to revert back.
