Why Won’t My EZGO Golf Cart Start? EZGO golf carts may not start due to a transmission problem, corroded battery terminals or a faulty wiring coming from the ignition. Why a EZGO won't start: Transmission Problem Battery Problem Ignition Problem Transmission Problem For safety reasons, many EZGO golf carts won’t start if its transmission is not in the Park position. Check and make sure the gear is in the Park position. Try and shift the gear from Neutral to Park to make sure that it has truly shifted to Park position. Set the EZGO TXT or RXV into the Park position, and then try and start the golf cart. If the golf cart starts successfully it’s definitely because the safety mechanism was preventing your EZGO golf cart to start. Battery Problem Since the batteries on EZGO golf carts contain corrosive acid you’ll need to wear thick work gloves before checking the battery. Also, make sure the golf cart is turned off. Start checking the battery by twisting the battery connector back and forth and then try and start the golf cart. If the golf cart almost starts or starts successfully then it’s highly likely that the battery terminals are corroded. You’ll need to call a technician to remove the battery and have both the battery terminals and compartment cleaned. Also, check if the battery connections are in good condition. If it looks worn and corroded you’ll also need to have the technician replace the battery connections as well. Ignition Problem The ignition is used to start your EZGO golf cart. As such if there is a problem with it, your EZGO golf cart won’t start. Check and make sure your golf cart’s transmission is set to Park and the battery is in good condition. If there is no problem with the transmission or battery then it’s likely that there’s a problem with the ignition. In order to fix the ignition, have a technician check its wiring to see if it’s loose or damaged and worn. If it’s loose, your technician can reseat the wires back. This should normally do the trick. If it doesn’t then it’s likely that the wires have corroded and need to be replaced. Troubleshooting EZGO Golf Cart Starting Problems To troubleshoot a golf cart that is hard to start, you need to know what type of EZGO golf cart it is. Gasoline Golf Cart Electric Golf Cart While both types of golf cart are different, there are two things you need to troubleshoot whether you have a gasoline or an electric golf cart; the fuse and ignition. Fuse: If your golf cart is not starting, there could be a problem with the fuse. Here’s how to troubleshoot: Locate the service panel. Inside the service panel, you’ll find different types of electrical components including the fuse. Check to see if it’s worn or blown. If so, it needs to be replaced. Call a technician to have it checked for its continuity. This will help you see if there is a problem anywhere with the circuitry that’s connected to the fuse. This is strongly recommended because if there is a problem with the circuitry, then a new fuse can get blown immediately and you won’t know why. Ignition: If the battery and fuse are fine then you’ll need to check the ignition. Electric Golf Carts: Make sure the golf cart is either in forward, reverse or neutral and not anything in between as this will interrupt the electrical flow and give you the wrong readings. Check the ignition wire that runs from your ignition to the solenoid starter. See if there is any corrosion or damage to it. If there is then this could be the problem and you need to have the wire replaced. If replacing the ignition wire doesn’t fix the problem then there could be something wrong with the ignition itself. To check the continuity of the ignition wire you’ll need to use an ohmmeter or a continuity tester. To do this, set the switch to off and set your ohmmeter to X1. You should get no readings on your ohmmeter when checking for continuity in the terminals and switch case. For electrical golf carts, set the switch to the “Forward” position and check the continuity in the F and B terminals. Put the switch to “Reverse” and check the continuity between the R, ACC, B terminals. Gasoline Carts: set the switch to “ON” and take a reading with your ohmmeter or continuity tester. If you don’t get a reading on any of the tests above, this indicates that there is a problem with the ignition whether it’s an electric or a gasoline golf cart. If there is no problem with the fuse and ignition then the troubleshooting process will depend on the type of golf cart you have. Different types of EZGO golf carts require different ways of troubleshooting. To go deeper into your troubleshooting process you need to call a certified mechanic to have it checked. Here are things you should check if you have a Gasoline Golf Cart: A stuck fuel tank float that shows the fuel is full when it’s actually empty. The spark plug is damaged and or corroded. The air filter element is clogged with dirt. If you have an electrical golf cart then you’ll need to check the many battery connections that are there. It could be that the battery is fully charged but loses power faster than usual or it could be that there’s something wrong with the connections. To find the cause of any of these problems, you should call a certified technician/mechanic. How to Fix EZGO TXT That Won’t Move If your EZGO TXT won’t move there could be a problem with: The solenoid. The circuit. The battery. Or the F/R Switch. The Solenoid: The solenoid in your golf cart is responsible for sending electricity from the battery to the rest of the cart. When you press your golf cart pedal you should hear a clicking noise, if you don’t hear a clicking noise there might be a problem with the solenoid. To make sure your solenoid is functioning properly check it with a voltmeter. If you hear a click then you need to check its power with the voltmeter. Set the voltmeter to ohms and disconnect any cables from the two large terminals of the solenoid. Turn the golf car’s key to off and the transmission to neutral. Press the probes of your voltmeter to the large terminals. You should get no readings whatsoever. Next, turn on your golf cart and set the transmission to forward. You should be able to hear a click when you hit the pedal. Set your voltmeter to measure ohms and place the probes on the large terminals. The voltmeter should read somewhere between 0 to 0.4 ohms. If it’s higher than 0.4 ohms it shows that your solenoid has faulty contacts and needs to be replaced. If you don’t hear a click then: Set your voltmeter to 200 DC and place the probe on the small terminals. Set the key to on and set the transmission to forward. Step on the accelerator. If your voltage detects a charge from your battery then it indicates that there is something faulty with the solenoid and you need to have a technician to replace it for you. If it doesn’t show any charge then there is something wrong elsewhere. The Circuit: Electric golf carts such as the EZGO TXT are made up of various types of connections to and from the battery to different parts of the golf cart. If your golf cart won’t start there’s probably something wrong with the circuit. Check the circuits for corrosion or damage. If there is, you can clean it up and try it again. Make sure that the golf cart is turned off and the transmission is set to neutral when doing so. To check if there is a stable continuity in the circuits you need to use a voltmeter. If your circuit is not functioning properly, call a certified technician to have it checked. There might also be a chance that one of the circuit pins came loose from the controller pins. If this is the case, simply plugging back the circuit should solve the issue. The Battery: Check if the battery is fully charged. If it is and it’s still not working then there might be an issue with the wiring that’s connected to and from the battery. For this, you need to have a technician to check for you. If your battery is not fully charged make sure to charge it and try it. If it doesn’t work then there might be a problem with the charging port and you’ll need to have it fixed or replaced. Sometimes the battery itself might be the problem and you cannot get it to charge fully and even if you did, the battery will not last long. If this is the case then there might be a problem with the battery terminals and you’ll need to have the battery replaced by a certified technician. The Forward/Reverse Switch: Another reason why your EZGO TXT won’t move is because of a malfunctioned Forward/Reverse Switch. The Forward/Reverse switch carries the brunt of transmitting power from the battery to the motor. Over time it can become worn out and its contacts can burn. If this is the case you’ll need to have a certified technician to replace it with a new one that is made specifically for the EZGO TXT Golf Cart. How to Fix EZGO RXV That Won’t Move The reason why your EZGO RXV won’t move can be due to a fault with the batteries, wiring or brakes. Battery Problems: RXV is known to have a very sensitive battery pack. If you feel that your battery is sluggish or loses power faster than normal you should have it checked immediately. Ignoring it can cause more problems such as corrupting the memory map of the controller. To check if the battery is faulty use a Digital Multimeter or a Digital Voltmeter to read the voltage when it is turned off. You need to do this at least 12 hours after the last full charge. After connecting the Digital Multimeter/Digital Voltmeter, turn the key forward and take note of the voltage readings. If the reading shows anything under than 48v it means you have dead batteries and you’ll need to replace them immediately before they cause any more damage. It’s highly recommended to change your dead battery pack with a 6 pack battery, instead of the usual 4 battery pack. A 6 pack battery is more durable and gives better performance. Wiring Problems: Loose wiring or a wire that’s damaged can definitely cause the EZGO RXV to not move. It could be the wire that’s connected to the batter or to the tow run switch. Brake Problems: Many times the reason your RXV won’t move is because of brake problems. The RXV is designed to be disabled when there is a problem with the break. Many times, the wiring that connects the brakes to the controller gets loose or is damaged. This can disable your EZGO RXV. Tightening the loose connections will fix the issue. In order to troubleshoot and fix the wiring problem, you’ll need to call a certified technician to inspect and repair it. How to Fix EZGO Marathon That Won’t Start The reason your EZGO Marathon won’t start is because of a fault with: The spark plug The carburetor The mufflers If one of these three is damaged it could cause problems with your golf cart. To find out what is causing the problem, you’ll need to do a compressor test. If the compressor test shows a result of anything below 100 lbs it might mean that your muffler is plugged. In order to fix this, you’ll need to cook the muffler. That will burn anything that’s blocking it. You’ll also need to see if your spark plug is functioning. Check if your spark plug is fouled, oily or if the gap is bridged. All of these can indicate that your spark plug needs to be replaced with a new one. Next, you’ll need to check the carburetor. There could be a leaking gasket or a float that’s stuck. Have a certified technician remove the carburetor and clean/rebuild it. You can also replace the carburetor with a new one if your carburetor cannot be fixed. EZGO Gas Golf Cart Clicks but Won’t Start The reason why a Gas Golf Cart Clicks but won’t start is because the connector to and from the solenoid is either loose or corroded. Check the wiring for any damage or corrosion. If you find any then you’ll need to replace it. If there are no damages or corrosion, then simply tighten the connection to the solenoid and try again. If it still won’t start, most likely there is a problem with the battery. Use a voltmeter to have it checked. A full battery should have a charge of 12.7V when the cart is not started. When you start the EZGO golf cart, it should only drop a little. If it drops drastically it means your battery has gone bad. To be sure, hire a technician to have it checked. If your battery’s bad you’ll need to get a certified technician to have it replaced. EZGO Golf Cart Won't Start No Spark The reason your EZGO golf cart won’t start and has no spark is that there is a fault with the ignitor/key switch. The most common reason for a failed ignitor is a bad voltage regulator. Therefore, when you replace or fix the ignitor on your golf cart, make sure you also check the voltage regulator and see if it needs to be replaced. There have also been cases where the battery has switch polarity for some reason. In order to fix this, you’ll need to drain the battery power completely by using it to light a bulb that also has the same voltage as the battery which is 12v. After fixing this, you can recharge the battery with the right polarity. Keep note that fully draining a battery is not good for the battery, but it should be fine if the battery is in good condition. If you’re unsure, call a certified technician to have it checked and fixed. EZGO Won’t Start When Hot The reason your EZGO golf cart is hot and won’t start can be because of the following reasons: Clogged muffler. Corroded/Damaged Wiring. Damaged Solenoids. Clogged Muffler: Overtime, the muffler of your golf cart tends to slowly get clogged by gunk and unburnt oil. To unclog it, simply make a fire and remove your muffler and put it there. This will burn out all the gunk and unburnt oil that’s clogging the muffler, unblocking it. If that doesn’t work check the wires and see if there is any sign of damage or corrosion. Corroded/Damaged Wiring: It can also be because the starter connection that is connected to the solenoid has gone bad and does not transmit enough power for the solenoid to work. Damaged Solenoid: Also check the pack voltage at both of the main posts of the solenoid. If one or both of them are damaged then this can also lead to your golf cart getting hot and not moving. If you’re unsure, call a certified technician to have a look at it. 1999 EZGO Won’t Run The reason why your 1999 EZGO golf cart won’t run is that there is something wrong with the Forward/Reverse Switch or the Controller. To check, you’ll need a voltmeter and attach it to the controller and put the Forwards/Reverse Switch in Forward, key in ON, and press the pedal down. If you’re not getting any voltage output it means there is a failure in the controller and it needs to be replaced. If you get a full pack voltage in the voltmeter but the motor isn’t turning it means there is something wrong with the Forwards/Reverse Switch and it needs to be fixed or replaced by a certified technician. Also if you don’t hear any clicking sound when pressing down the pedal then you’ll need to have the Solenoid replaced or repaired. 2005 EZGO Won’t Run The reason your 2005 EZGO won’t run is that it either has a bad solenoid or a bad connection. In order to check it, you’ll need to: Remove both small wires on the solenoid. Then attach two jumper cables from the positive of the battery to the positive of the solenoid and the negative of the battery to the negative of the solenoid. If the starter engine spins over then you have a problem with the starter connections. Either it’s loose, in which case you’ll need to tighten it. Or it’s corroded, in which case you’ll need to have it replaced. If the starter engine doesn’t spin over then take two big jumpers and jump the two large solenoid posts. If this spins over the starter engines then you have a problem with the solenoid and it will need to be replaced. A broken connector can also cause your 2005 EZGO not to run. In which case you’ll need to have it replaced by a certified technician. 2008 EZGO RXV won’t move The reason your 2008 EZGO RXV won’t move can be due to a faulty charger port, a disconnected buzzer or loose battery connections. Bad Charger Port: A bad charger port will give a reading to the system that it’s used for charging when it’s actually not. When the RXV misreads this, you won't be able to move your golf cart. This can also happen when the charger port is wet. Disconnected Buzzer: A disconnected buzzer can be misread as a system failure by your EZGO RXV. As such you won’t be able to move until you fix it. Tighten or replace the connection and try again. Accelerator Position: The accelerator is not coming back to its right position after removing your feet from the pedal. This could be because of debris that has collected and got stuck in the accelerator. Loose Battery Connections: Loose connections to the battery can prevent your golf cart to transmit power from the battery. This will cause your EZGO RXV to not move. Faulty Run/Tow Switch: Run/Tow Switches can corrode and get worn out over time which can cause failures. Check and see if it needs to be replaced. Faulty Solenoid: A faulty solenoid can also cause mechanical failures that result in your EZGO RXV to not move. Check with a voltmeter to check if it’s functioning properly. Otherwise, call a certified technician to have it checked. 2012 EZGO RXV is Hard to Start The reason a 2012 EZGO RXV golf cart won’t move can be due to faulty brakes or stuck pedals. Faulty Brakes: You’ll need a voltmeter to diagnose your brakes and see if you get the right voltage readings. To do this, hire a certified technician to let him have a look. It might need to be repaired or replaced. Stuck Pedals: Check and see if the pedals go back to its resting position after you’ve used your golf cart. The EZGO RXV is very sensitive, and if the pedals are not in its right resting position it could create an issue. Check and see if there is anything that's causing the pedals to get stuck. Debris and grass tend to clog the pedals over time and it needs to be cleaned periodically.
