PING i540 Iron Loft & Lie Adjustment Guide

The PING i540 iron set has factory lofts from 19° to 47° and captured standard lie angles from 60.5° to 64.1°. Loft and lie changes should be fitted from the actual club measurements and ball flight.

What stands out about the i540 specs?

The 29° 7 iron is already very strong. Further strengthening should solve a real flight or gap problem rather than chase a lower loft number. The 4i to 5i loft gap is 3° compared with a 4° set median. That tighter spacing is the first place to check for carry overlap. PING lists the 7 iron at 27.5° in Power Spec versus 29° standard. Power Spec and Retro Spec

PING publishes alternative loft configurations for this model. Power Spec is a fitting option for more distance or lower spin while staying within PING’s calculated set design. Retro Spec is aimed at higher trajectory, stopping power and more traditional gapping. PING lists the 7 iron at 27.5° in Power Spec versus 29° standard. Retro Spec lists the 7 iron at 31°. The standard lie figures above correspond to PING’s Black Color Code at standard length on current product specifications. PING’s current chart uses ten lie codes from 4° flat to 5° upright.

Where should you check bending first?

The 4i to 5i loft gap is 3° compared with a 4° set median. That tighter spacing is the first place to check for carry overlap.

Should this set be bent stronger?

The 29° 7 iron is already very strong. Further strengthening should solve a real flight or gap problem rather than chase a lower loft number.

As a geometry example, taking the 7 iron from 29° to 28° would make it 1° stronger and reduce effective bounce by roughly 1° from the published 9° baseline. Actual measured results can vary.

Compare the changed club with both neighbours before bending.

Can you bend just one iron?

Yes. If the unusual loft gap identified above also produces the wrong carry gap, changing one measured club is usually more targeted than shifting the whole set.

Used PING irons: read the dot, then measure

The dot identifies the club’s intended PING lie code, but it does not prove a used iron still measures there. Previous repair work, bending and changes to PING’s historical Color Code system make actual measurement more important than the paint alone.

Best fitting workflow for this set

  1. Measure current loft and lie for every problem club.
  2. Compare actual carry, peak height and start direction with the factory spacing.
  3. Use loft for gapping or flight problems and lie for directional fit problems.
  4. Start with the smallest useful change.
  5. Re-measure after adjustment and re-test against neighbouring clubs.

When not to bend

  • The goal is only to copy another model’s printed lofts.
  • The problem is strike, shaft length or swingweight instead of loft or lie.
  • The requested change would make an already tight gap even tighter without a carry reason.
  • The hosel is damaged or has been repeatedly adjusted.
  • The exact head has not been confirmed safe for the requested amount.
